The volume of major infrastructure projects is significantly increasing with £56bn of major projects and programmes planned over the next five years. These include Reading remodelling, Crossrail, Thames Link, Kings Cross, London 2012 transport priorities and major upgrades to the London underground. Many of these projects are of major size and complexity.
Our presentation will consider what needs to be done to improve the capability and capacity of the industry to successfully manage this major programme of work.
The rail industry has a good foundation in project management but still finds it difficult to attract and retain the higest calibre project managers. Partly this is due to a perception of the rail industry as an operations and logistics industry, with a lack of visibility of scope and scale of the projects to be delivered. This difficulty in attracting and retaining the best project management talent over the long term results in deep cyclic skills shortages and spiralling costs.
Nevertheless, the industry has a golden opportunity to address these weaknesses because:
- The credit crunch is releasing high quality resources which could be encouraged to join the rail industry at reasonable costs
- The Association for Project Management is moving towards establishing a register of Chartered Practitioners which will create a new benchmark for professional project management
- Organisations in the Rail Sector are committing to the development of professional development of project managers
Attend our free seminar to discuss the challenges and hear how PMProfessional will take learning, career development and capability beyond the classroom.
